Relationship Before Vacancy: Walter Buter on Tech Talent
12/08/2026
Most recruitment starts with a job to fill. Umbrella Club starts with the person.
That’s the idea at the heart of a recent interview our founder and CEO, Walter Buter, gave to Melbourne.org.au, the news platform of the Committee for
Melbourne, as part of their Fast Five series spotlighting influential leaders across the city’s business community.
In the interview, Walter covers two key ideas:
- A different starting point. Umbrella Club invests in understanding its members’ skills, goals and interests long before a role ever comes up, shifting the model from transactional recruitment to genuine community.
- A shifting talent landscape. Demand for specialist skills in AI, cyber security and data has moved from early experimentation towards measurable, well-governed outcomes across the enterprise, bringing new challenges for business leaders over the next 12 months, from proving the value of technology investment to building trusted talent communities rather than relying on recruitment alone.
It’s a worthwhile read for business leaders, hiring managers, and technology professionals thinking about how they engage specialist talent and where the biggest opportunities in the sector are headed next.
Walter is the Founder and CEO of Umbrella Club.
He emigrated to Australia in early 2018, bringing with him years of experience building a successful company in the Netherlands. Drawing inspiration from community-based staffing models that had thrived in Europe, he adapted these concepts to fit the Australian market. This led to the creation of Umbrella Club, a unique solution tailored to meet the needs of IT contractors while fostering a strong sense of community.
