At Umbrella Club, we connect organisations with experienced professionals through trusted working relationships rather than open listings.
To give a clearer sense of the people behind the network, we’d like to introduce one of our members, Travis.
His experience in Enterprise GRC, AI governance, and IT risk reflects the depth of capability within the community and the type of expertise organisations can access through it.

Meet Travis

Do you have a niche or special areas of interest?
My expertise centres on Enterprise GRC with a strong focus leaning towards AI governance and general IT risk, including Cyber Security.
I’m particularly passionate about creating practical, scalable compliance frameworks that don’t just check boxes but genuinely strengthen organisational resilience.
Third-party risk management and the governance challenges of emerging technologies, such as AI, are areas where I’m actively deepening my expertise and building specialised capabilities.
Describe your ideal project
This involves designing and implementing comprehensive GRC frameworks for organisations navigating complex regulatory environments or digital transformation.
I thrive on projects that require cross-functional collaboration, working with IT, legal, operations, and executive leadership to build governance structures that are both robust and practical.
The sweet spot for me is when I can leverage my technical background in cybersecurity alongside strategic risk management to solve multifaceted compliance challenges, particularly in areas like AI governance or third-party ecosystem management.
I’m energised by projects where I can create lasting value, not just achieve compliance milestones.
What advice would you give to an IT contractor at the start of their career?
Invest in relationships as much as you invest in skills. Network consistently; be present at conferences, industry events, and connect regularly with colleagues and like-minded professionals.
We’re all juggling family and friends, but professional relationships require intentional cultivation. These connections don’t just open doors; they provide support, mentorship, and opportunities you can’t predict.
Your network becomes your safety net and your springboard.
How long have you been a member of Umbrella Club?
Just over a year now, coming up on 13 months.
What are your favourite things about Umbrella Club?
The genuine relationship-building and being part of what I believe will become a leading professional network in Melbourne.
I love that we come together in person to discuss relevant industry topics in an informal, supportive environment where real learning happens organically.

Travis’s experience reflects what Umbrella Club is built around: staying connected to people you trust and continuing conversations beyond a single project.
Members share knowledge, support each other, and remain visible within the industry rather than restarting the process each time work changes.
If you’d like to build stronger professional relationships and stay part of those conversations, joining Umbrella Club is a good place to begin.

Walter is the Founder and CEO of Umbrella Club.
He emigrated to Australia in early 2018, bringing with him years of experience building a successful company in the Netherlands. Drawing inspiration from community-based staffing models that had thrived in Europe, he adapted these concepts to fit the Australian market. This led to the creation of Umbrella Club, a unique solution tailored to meet the needs of IT contractors while fostering a strong sense of community.
